Routine - Of Squeezing Lemons and Spraying Butter

juuuungah... juuuungah... juuuungah... The sound of lemon halves being sacrificed to the juicer was music to my ears many Saturday mornings at the Chick-Fil-A. One of the things working there taught me was that a familiar routine can sometimes be as comforting as it is constricting.

Nearly everything at Chick-Fil-A was a routine; everything was ritualized. 3 sprays of butter on the top of the chargrill, 3 sprays of butter on the bottom. 30 filets = milk filets, press filets, flip filets, press filets, 2 at a time 15 times. Pop a nugget box open, 2-4-6-8, slam the lid closed. Pop a nugget box open, 2-4-6-8, slam the lid closed. Thunk, thunk, thunk hundreds of times to slice the lemons.

juuuungah... juuuungah... juuuungah... Lemons disintegrating into lemon juice one half at a time, one half every half second. The right hand presses down on the rind, the left has already selected the next to be juiced.

Routine can be interesting. Routine can be enjoyable. Anything to get me away from the register and those idiots on the other side of the counter.
